How to Put Together a Cabaret Act

How to Put Together a Cabaret Act

One of the best showcases for new talent is the cabaret act. Whether you are planning to strut your stuff in front of industry executives and area audiences, or are just looking for a way to keep up your chops while earning a few bucks, you can plan the perfect cabaret act by following these tips.
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of your musical likes and dislikes. Make another list of your vocal strengths and weaknesses. Write a list of your favorite songs or songs that communicate something that you feel strongly about. Using your lists, prioritize the elements that you most want to incorporate into your act.

  2. Step 2

Once you have an idea of what you wish to communicate and the type of music that suits your voice best, get specific. Plan a 1-hour show on paper. Your material should be fresh and unique, not songs that are over-performed or boring standbys. Instead, look for original or obsolete material that communicates what you are about or tells a story. Listen to old record albums, or visit the music section of your library to research songs from different eras which can be updated or interpreted in an original way by you and your band.

  3. Step 3

Start seeking venues so that you have an idea of the seating capacity of each one and what available dates they may have coming up in the future. Don’t book a venue yet, but make notes about the ones you visit. Decide if you will pay outright for the room or give a predetermined percentage of your cover charges to the room in lieu of rental.

  4. Step 4

Figure out a realistic budget for the venue, arrangements, musicians, lighting and sound person, mailings, performance clothing, sheet music and any other expenses you are likely to encounter. It could be helpful to speak to someone that has done a cabaret act recently to get a breakdown of her expenses.

  5. Step 5

Find your musicians. If you are on a strict budget, you may opt to keep it simple—a good pianist can accompany a cabaret act as effectively as a small band, if the arrangements are good. You may wish to hire an arranger to make sure that your musical selections are presented in a fresh way. Look in the classified sections of your local newspapers, or find online musician sites where available musicians post notices. Another way to find good musicians is to frequent clubs where they play. Speak to other singers for recommendations, or ask bar managers and studio engineers if they know of musicians looking for work. You may have to negotiate a payment schedule based on future earnings, but some musicians want to be paid up front for rehearsals. Have them sign a contract that states explicitly the dates they will be available for rehearsals and performance, as well as the terms of payment.

  6. Step 6

Choose your venue, and present a portion of your act to the cabaret’s booking agent, if required.

  7. Step 7

Create a mailing list with the names of everyone you know, everyone you know knows, anyone you have every worked with in any capacity, the names on other people’s mailing lists if you can access them and the mailing list names from any performance organizations that you belong to, such as MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabaret). If you are planning to invite industry executives, write a personal greeting on the card you send, and make sure they know you are looking forward to seeing them and are really expecting them to be there. Because they attend a lot of showcases, you want to make sure to give them plenty of advance notice about your showcase, and even send a reminder a week or two before the actual performance date (see Resources below).

  8. Step 8

Make sure you have enough easy-to-read copies of each piece of your sheet music or charts for everyone in the band, as well as yourself. Make sure any changes or musical notations are clearly marked, and discuss them before your musicians begin to play. This will save time and money in rehearsal.

  9. Step 9

If the club does not provide sound and light technicians, be sure to line those up well in advance of your performance, and make sure they are free to attend at least one of your rehearsals together.

  10. Step 10

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! If you can’t afford to pay your musicians for more than one or two rehearsals, tape the first one and use the playback while you rehearse.

  11. Step 11

Choose what you are going to wear and a couple of backup outfits, just in case your feelings change on the evening of your performance.

  12. Step 12

Be sure to have mailing lists or cards on each table in the room during the performance so that your audience can be notified about when you will be performing again. Ask for email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses in addition to names.

  13. Step 13

If you have a CD, T-shirts or any other items to promote during the act, have someone set up a table outside the door, and make sure the audience is aware that they are for sale. Include a mailing list request inside the CD case, as well, in case your audience member purchases a CD as a gift for a friend.

    Tips & Warnings
    • Be sure to follow up with any industry executives that attend your cabaret act. Thank them for being there, and let them know that you would like feedback, if possible, to help you improve your future performances.

How Does an Email Spam Company Collect E-mail Addresses?

    The Internet's Spam Problem

  1. Spam is seemingly everywhere. No matter how good the email filters may be, unwanted marketing email will somehow leak through. From advertisements for male enhancement to the notorious 419 "large amount of money needs a bank account" scams, spam is a growing problem for Internet providers and users alike.

According to Spamlaws.com, junkemail account for 14.5 billion messages a day, with advertising representing 36 percent of the content. Scam emails make up about 4 percent of the total amount, but that's enough to cost millions of dollars in losses per year. Some spam includes attachments that have viruses and malware, wreaking havoc on commercial and domestic computer users alike.
  2. Where Does Spam Come From?

  3. Spam comes from sources all over the world. Sophisticated software and programmers have made it easy to distribute thousands of messages by pressing one button. Spam emails are big business; spammers get paid by the amount of messages sent.

The first method is through actual corporate spam services. Many businesses pay for mass direct mailing, not knowing that their product is being marketed to unwitting consumers who don't wish to know about their product. These spammers may attach links to opt in or out of the mailing lists for people who wish to stop the letters. What many users don't know is that these links often mask signups for more lists down the line.

Businesses may send their own spam by utilizing purchased contact lists and employee manpower. Of course, the unpopular nature of spam keeps many businesses from doing this, but it happens nonetheless. In the United States, spamming is a federal offense and can bring jail sentences.

A more sophisticated method is to hijack a third-party server and send mail from that address. This way, the spammer is practically untraceable. This robs legitimate server operators of their valuable bandwidth, as well as their reputations once the crime happens.

Still other spammers steal onto personal computers through stolen passwords and usernames. This is done by using sophisticated keylogging malware that records and transmits private data to the spammer. This stealth software is often introduced onto the system by an unwitting user. The only way that the user may find out that there's been a breach is by being locked out of their email, or from their internet option provider. Often, this knowledge comes too late to avoid problems.
  4. Protect Your Computer First and Foremost

  5. There are a few simple steps that users can take to protect their accounts from spammers. The best step is to protect your property by using a good firewall along with trustworthy anti-virus software. If this sounds expensive and difficult, it's not; there are several companies that supply free, credible software that is easy to set up.

If the computer is used by childer and teens, make certain to filter out adult content. Spam is notoriously targeted towards the adult audience, and children may enter email addresses and private information without having the skills to discern safe sites. By keeping tabs on computer usage, parents can avoid potentially dangerous downloads and information leaks.
  6. Use the Internet Wisely

  7. Most people fall into the spam trap by not surfing smartly. For instance, an ad may feature a free popular product. Clicking on this ad may install a "cookie." or temporary tracker, onto the system. This cookie may record email addresses on the sly. The advertiser may, at some point, request the email address so that it can email a voucher for the product. For the most part, this is an operation that exists to mill addresses. If someone wants information for something that's free, it's probably too good to be true. Be safe, and don't give out the info.

Be wary of giving email addresses on opt-out lists. Most valid opt-out services carry the email address onto the form so that the user doesn't have to enter anything. If there's a command to enter an address, the service may be fake.

Also, never open an email attachment from an unfamiliar sender. These are almost always malware that will log passwords and user information. If an email message with an attachment appears that looks fishy, throw it out unopened. Being vigilant can help users avoid annoying, invasive spam and damage down the road.

How to Get South by Southwest Ticket Sales Alerts

If you plan to attend South by Southwest, you'll want to stay up to date on information concerning ticket sales, including relevant dates, prices and available methods to purchase tickets.
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Add your email address to mailing lists that are organized and run by South by Southwest participants. Check the websites of your favorite bands, movie directors and artists to see if they offer mailing lists that include information about South by Southwest. Most likely, these participants will be very helpful in providing information about buying tickets, as it is their goal to invite as many people as possible to attend and view their work.

  2. Step 2

Ask to be included on the official South by Southwest mailing list. You can sign up for this mailing list in the "Information" section of the South by Southwest website by entering your email address and other contact information (see Resources below). There are individual lists for the music festival, film conference and interactive events, so feel free to sign up for any and all of these lists depending on your level of interest.

  3. Step 3

Check the official South by Southwest website for announcements about tickets. These types of announcements are usually included on the homepage. New information may be posted throughout the year prior to the South by Southwest conference, so be sure to check back often.

  4. Step 4

Sign up for a South by Southwest news RSS feed to your homepage. RSS stands for "really simple syndication," and it is an easy way to get regular alerts about a certain subject through a feed that appears on your personal homepage or blog. A wide variety of RSS reader software options are available, and they are sometimes offered through major website hosts (like Google and Blogger) for free.

  5. Step 5

Choose an RSS reader, then download and install it to your website. Copy the link that appears on the homepage under the "Get More Information" header and add it to your reader's list of feeds. You will now receive alerts as soon as they are posted to the South by Southwest website.

    Tips & Warnings
    • Tickets can be purchased for full access to all South by Southwest events or by genre, such as music, film or interactive media. Decide in advance which type of ticket you'd like to get, as you may receive a better price if you buy one pass that provides access to several events rather than individual tickets.

How to Load a List in OpenOffice Impress

OpenOffice Impress is a presentation program similar to PowerPoint and is part of the OpenOffice application suite. It is frequently desirable to populate a list box from an external data source like a spreadsheet. Fortunately, Impress has a macro writing capability like other components of OpenOffice. The following steps will show how to load a list in OpenOffice Impress with a macro.
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use Universal Network Objects (UNO) methods for short lists. UNO is the component model used by OpenOffice and is an easy way to create dialog boxes because it is interface-based. By the same token, however, each call to a UNO method requires a considerable amount of time, which can become prohibitive with long lists.

  2. Step 2

Create variables for intermediate objects as shown in the following code snippet:

    …
    oListBox = oDlg.getControl("ListBox1");
    For i = 0 to 1000;
    oListBox.addItem(…);
    Next;
    …

This allows us to avoid 1,000 calls to getControl() when performing a name lookup.

  3. Step 3

Make additional code optimizations to the snippet in Step 2. In this example, we would then keep a separate counter and pass it to addItem() instead of calling getItemCount() 1,000 times.

  4. Step 4

Fill an array A with string values from a spreadsheet (column A in this example). The following snippet would be placed in a loop:

    yMax = 1000;
    Redim A(yMax) As String;
    For y = 0 to yMax;
    A(y) = mySheet.getCellByPosition(0,y).String;
    Next.

  5. Step 5

Load the array that was filled in Step 4 to the list box with a single instruction: oDlg.getControl("ListBox1").Model.StringItemList() = A(). Note how this method fills the array internally without making an external library call for each item in the list box. The list box can therefore be populated much more quickly.

How to Join an Alien Usenet Discussion Group

Usenet discussion groups are similar to mailing lists or forums with BBS style messages, but are easier to join and are often more public. Usenet groups exist on almost every topic imaginable, including aliens. With a bit of preparation, you can easily join an alien Usenet discussion group.
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet service provider
  • ISP news server address
  • Mail client
  • Newsreader client

Join an Alien Discussion Group on Usenet

  1. Step 1

Install a newsreader client, so you can join an Usenet discussion group. Most email software now includes an integrated newsreader, and there are a few web readers (news-to-web gateways) available. However, the news-to-web gateways offer limited features.

  2. Step 2

Search through your Internet service provider's (ISP) available Usenet groups. If your ISP does not host newsgroup servers, you will be referred to a third party provider. Contact your ISP for more information.

  3. Step 3

Look at the alt.* hierarchy groups. Discussion groups in this hierarchy all begin with "alt." and provide specialized interest groups, including one for aliens. The discussion groups "alt.ufo.reports" and "alt.alien.visitors" are just a couple of the Usenet groups available.

  4. Step 4

Subscribe to the alien newsgroups you are interested in according to the directions for your reader client. Most clients allow you to perform a simple search to select the groups you want to join and then simply click "Subscribe."

  5. Step 5

Read through the last few days of messages before you reply. You should bring yourself up to speed on the current discussion before you join in. Otherwise, you may be repeating another comment or replying to old posts.

  6. Step 6

Expect to find just about anything in the alien newsgroups. Posts will include discussions on implant chips, abductions, species, sightings, space ships, pop culture, science and religion.

    Tips & Warnings
    • There are several freeware and shareware Usenet newsreaders available for both Macs and PCs.
    • Your ISP will provide the server for newsgroups. It is usually "news.xxx.net" or "mail.xxx.net."
    • Search for "Alien," "UFO," "Abduction" or any specific alien term when looking for a Usenet group to join. While more general groups usually have a more active discussion, you may find a specific topic you want to focus on.
    • If you no longer want to be part of the Usenet discussion, just unsubscribe. Unlike forums and mailing lists, no one will know if you come and go.
    • Expect popular newsgroups to have thousands of recent messages. You should only download the last 500--possibly just the headers--to conserve hard disk space.

Your first step is to go to www.123contractorquotes.com. Select the type of service industry you are looking for, and enter the zip code, and you get a list of plumbing companies in that town. If you want to look in neighboring towns, just use the zip code finder under the zip code box. Remember that related companies may be in your market too, so try HVAC, spa installers, etc. off the industry list. Just copy and paste the companies into a spreadsheet or print out a page for each town.

  3. Step 3

One drawback to that method is that you have to go town by town, and you don't get websites or phone numbers. A way to get a more complete list is to go to Google, type in the name of the business you are looking for and the zip code like this- plumbing 20151 and hit Search. This returns a list of local businesses with names, addresses, websites and phone numbers. Go to map view, and you can see where each company is located. Now you are really covering the plumbing market in the area.

  4. Step 4

The Google method has a couple of other advantages. It is not limited to just the zip code you entered, it will expand to find all plumbing businesses nearby. It will also find related businesses, such as suppliers, kitchen and bath contractors, and even handymen. Pretty comprehensive. In a day or so you will have a powerful business mailing list to cover as wide an area as you want.

  5. Step 5

The Google method also works with with non-service businesses. Just replace plumbing with book stores, craft shops, quilting, or pizza and you can build a business mailing list for those types of businesses also.

Good luck to you, and I hope these methods help you reach a bigger market!

How to Get Off of the My Canadian Pharmacy Mailing List

Are receiving Spam emails as a part of the "My Canadian Pharmacy" fradulent ring of websites? Here are some steps you can take to not only nip these spams in the bud, but also to keep yourself from getting on spam lists in the future.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Time and willingness to do a little research
  1. Step 1

Understand the background of the scam.

This scam preys on people who are looking to buy drugs at a discounted rate from Canadian pharmacies. Unfortunately, this scam involves a ring of fake sites that are affiliated with the #1 spam offender in the world, who has also been linked to online pornography and credit card and identity theft. All of the symbols on the site that seem to prove its legitimacy are fake. For more information, check out the SpamWiki article at: http:// spamtrackers.eu/ wiki/index.php?title=My_ Canadian_Pharmacy.

  2. Step 2

    Understand how the scam operates.

Essentially, these sites hijack space on servers that are owned by other, often reputable companies. These servers - computers that are constantly connected to the internet - are usually ones that have passwords that are easy to guess, allowing them to be hacked into. One of the best way to stem the spam coming to you is to find out which domain is sending the emails to you and file a spam report with SpamCop. After complaints are received, spammers lose their internet access and face consequences for breaking the "acceptable use policy" of the ISP (internet service provider). SpamCop uses your report to find out who the ISP is and to file a complaint with them.

If you can find out who the ISP for the domain is yourself, you can complain to them directly to root out the problem on their servers. With your complaint, they may be able to find the machine that has been compromised, locate and remove the directory that contains the infection from the pharmacy web server, and take steps to make sure that their machines are protected from future hacks. Incidentally, if you own a domain or server or even have a computer that is always connected to the internet, you can be a victim as well - take steps to make sure that your computer is secure.

  3. Step 3

    Submit a SpamCop complaint.

Open your Web browser and navigate to SpamCop (http://www .spamcop.net/). Click the "Report Spam" tab and register. You will receive an email with a password. Enter your email address and password to login. Go to your email program in another browser window and open the spam email. View the source code of the email. Highlight the source code and cut and paste it into the form on the SpamCop site. Click the "Process Spam" button. Then, click "Send Spam Report(s) Now."

If you receive a lot of spam, it may mean entering a lot of SpamCop reports. Be persistent and your efforts are very likely to pay off. Realize, however, that this is an ongoing battle.

  4. Step 4

Contact the registrar of the site to file a fales Whois records complaint.

Whois.net is an online research service that allows you to find out who is behind a website. By entering in the url for a fake pharmacy site, you can find out who their ISP is and potentially other information such as the name and address of the people running the domain.

  5. Step 5

Send an email to webcomplaints@ ora.fda.gov.

The people who run this scam are commiting not only internet crimes, but also are potentially manufacturing and shipping drugs that could be harmful. Therefore, the FDA is a good place to go to lodge complaints.

  6. Step 6

Send complaints to the organizations whose seals of approval have been fradulently placed on the fake pharmacy Web site.

Often, seals of approval from organizations such as the BBB (Better Business Bureau), Pharmacy Checker, and Visa appear on the site. A few tactics that the creators of these sites use is to not make these icons clickable or for clicks to redirect to a fake site that resembles the official site. Using your browser and not the fake pharmacy site, search for these organizations and find email addresses to contact to report the misuse of their seals. A few addresses that victims of this scheme have mentioned are: verifiedbyvisa @visa.com and bbbmp@bbbmp.ca.

  7. Step 7

    Change your email address.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but, once your email address has been compromised, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to effectively stop receiving spam messages. If you feel that all of the above efforts are not helping, and you are still receiving a massive amount of spam, consider changing your main email address. Update all of your contacts once you have done so and ask them to under no circumstances pass it on without your permission. Learn as much as you can about how to protect this new email adress from spammers. Also, get a second email address that you use for online registrations. You may need to change this secondary email address frequently.

Another possibility is to register your email address with SpamCop. For a yearly fee of $30, you can use them to protect your email address.

How to Get Rid of E-mail Spam

Unsolicited junk e-mail, or spam, is an unwelcome and often offensive byproduct of the Internet's success. Although there's no guarantee you can avoid all spam, there are ways to avoid looking at most of it.

Instructions

    Basic prevention

  1. Step 1

If you're already getting spam messages, check with your Internet service provider to see whether it has a spam-prevention option that scans your incoming e-mail for known spammers.

  2. Step 2

If you're lucky enough not to be getting spam now, then sign up for a second (free) e-mail address from a service such as Yahoo or Hotmail. Use this address exclusively for e-commerce, mailing-list subscriptions and bulletin-board postings of any kind. Reserve your main e-mail address for private e-mail to and from friends.

  3. Rule filtering

  4. Step 1

Create an e-mail folder called Suspected Spam.

  5. Step 2

Use the filtering feature in your e-mail program to create rules that redirect spam messages to your Suspected Spam folder. Most spam is not addressed to its recipient by name.

  6. Step 3

Define a rule for incoming mail that says, "If my name appears in the To: or cc: field, then move this message to the Inbox." The procedure for defining rules varies among e-mail programs, so you should consult your program's Help feature to learn exactly how this works.

  7. Step 4

Define individual rules to catch e-mail that isn't addressed to you personally but that you nevertheless want to receive, such as messages from lists you've subscribed to. Have these rules redirect the relevant messages to the Inbox or to special folders that you have created for mail from those sources--for instance: "If the Sender field includes 'MyList,' then send this message to the MyList folder."

  8. Step 5

Define a final rule that sends all other e-mail that hasn't already been redirected by one of your other rules to the Suspected Spam box. For instance, a rule that says, "If the Sender field isn't 'XYXYXYXYY,' then move this message to the Suspected Spam folder" would work as a catchall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never reply to a spam message, even to request that your name be removed from the list. That just tells the spammers that your address is valid.

How to Stop Direct Mail Advertising

You go to the mailbox, eagerly anticipating a letter from Aunt Martha and instead you find the box stuffed with junk mail. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each of us gets about 40 lbs. of unsolicited mail a year. Forty-four percent of that mail goes unopened; only 2 percent ever gets a response. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce the amount of unwanted mail you get.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Register with the Mail Preference Service of the Direct Marketing Association (see link in Resources). It is the largest supplier of mailing lists for commercial advertisers. This removes your name from the association's mailing lists.

  2. Step 2

Call (888) 567-8688 to stop unsolicited credit card offers. Consumer credit reporting agencies, like Experian and Equifax, have mailing lists often used by credit card companies to send out direct mail. Calling this number will remove your name from these lists.

  3. Step 3

Send an e-mail to Abacus, Inc. at optout@abacus-us.com to stop catalogs from coming to your home. Write or e-mail the specific company if you want to stop an individual catalog from being mailed to you.

  4. Step 4

Request a privacy designation on your name every time you order something over the phone, over the Internet, through the mail, whenever you subscribe to a magazine or become a member of a group. Request the same designation when you deal with banks, mortgage companies, insurance agencies, phone or cable companies, frequent flier programs and mail order companies you do business with.

  5. Step 5

Do not send in product warranty cards. These cards are often filled with questions about personal preferences and are used for mailing lists. Keep the receipt and a product will remain under warranty for the designated time.

  6. Step 6

Complete the U.S. Post Office form 1500 to stop offensive, sexually orientated mail.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't want to go online to the Direct Marketing Association, ask to remove your name from its lists by sending a written request to: Mail Preference Service Direct Marketing Association P.O. Box 643 Carmel, NY 10512
  • Writing "Return to Sender" or "Refused" on junk mail and putting it back in your mail box is futile. The post office does not forward junk mail; it discards it.
